Our Silk
Why we build pillows from 22-momme mulberry silk
EternaSilk pillows begin with 22-momme mulberry silk — the same weight used by many premium silk pillowcase and bedding brands for everyday use. At this density, more silk threads are packed into each square inch than in lighter 19-momme fabrics, giving our silk throw pillows a smoother hand, richer drape and excellent long-term durability.
For you, that translates into decorative pillows that feel noticeably more substantial than polyester or low-weight silk alternatives. The covers catch light with a soft glow, hold their shape over a feather-full insert, and are designed to live on your bed or sofa for years — not just a single season.
What makes mulberry silk different
Mulberry silk comes from silkworms raised on a diet of mulberry leaves. Because their environment and diet are controlled, the fibres they spin are long, smooth and consistent. That consistency is what gives mulberry silk pillow covers their signature hand feel and natural sheen — without synthetic shine or coatings.
Compared to common alternatives, mulberry silk is:
- Smoother against skin and hair, which helps reduce friction, frizz and tangles over time.
- Breathable and temperature-balancing, so pillows stay comfortable across seasons.
- Less absorbent than cotton, so it does not pull oils and treatments from hair and skin as quickly.
- Naturally elegant, with a quiet, light-reflecting lustre that instantly elevates a room.
Whether a pillow ends up under your head during an afternoon nap or simply lives on the sofa, mulberry silk brings a level of comfort and refinement you notice the first time you touch it.
Why 22-momme is the sweet spot
“Momme” (pronounced moh-mee) is silk’s weight standard — similar to how thread count describes the density of cotton. It measures how much a fixed length of silk fabric weighs. A higher momme means more silk threads are woven into each square inch, creating a denser, more durable fabric.
In practice:
- 19-momme silk is lightweight and more budget-friendly, but can wear sooner with daily use.
- 22-momme silk adds significantly more silk to the weave, improving drape, hand feel and longevity — a widely recommended weight for quality pillowcases and bedding.
- Heavier weights (25 momme and above) are extremely dense and luxurious, but often better suited to specialised bedding than decorative pillows.
We chose 22-momme mulberry silk for EternaSilk because it hits the balance we care about most: a silk pillow that feels measurably richer and more resilient than lower weights, while still being comfortable and practical enough to live with every day.
How an EternaSilk pillow is constructed
Each pillow begins as original artwork, printed on both sides of the silk so every design is fully reversible. From there, each 20×20 inch silk cover is cut and sewn in small batches with details borrowed from upholstery, not disposable decor:
- Invisible zipper closures that disappear into the seam, so your eye stays on the artwork and silk.
- Clean, fully finished interior seams, with no raw edges, to keep the inside as considered as the outside.
- Careful print placement, so motifs and edges look intentional from every angle.
Every cover arrives with a 22×22 inch feather insert (mostly feather) in a cotton shell. That slightly larger insert inside the 20×20 cover creates the full, tailored silhouette interior designers use on beds and sofas.
How our silk pillows live in your home
EternaSilk pillows are designed to be lived with, not just styled for a single photo. The reversible artwork makes it easy to change the mood of a room — turn to one side for a softer, quieter palette, flip to the other when you want more colour or graphic presence.
The 22-momme silk gives each pillow a satisfying weight when you pick it up, and a gentle, light-catching sheen when you step back. On a sofa, they read as elevated, tailored accents; on a bed, they layer seamlessly with cotton, linen or wool bedding without feeling fragile or fussy.
Over time, you can build a small collection of designs that mix and layer together, rotating pillows between rooms while the consistent silk base keeps everything feeling cohesive.
Silk care, simplified
Silk rewards gentle care. Our pillows are designed so the covers can be removed and refreshed as needed. In short:
- Spot clean the cover when possible to extend time between full washes.
- For a full clean, hand-wash cold with a silk-safe detergent, or dry clean.
- Never wring; press out excess water gently and lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sun or heat.
- Steam, or iron on the lowest setting through a press cloth, to smooth any creases.
Our dedicated silk pillow care guide explains each step in more detail and includes tips on refreshing and fluffing the feather inserts over time.
